    Discover the unique culture and traditions of the Saramaccans, descendants of Africans who were once transported to work on plantations. Today, they are referred to as our inland residents, preserving their culture and traditions. Dan, the nearest village with a close collaboration with Danpaati River Lodge, benefits from lodge proceeds. During the Village Tour, visit Dan village, where a guide shares insights into the living conditions and habits of the indigenous population.

     

    Forest Walk

    Considered one of the best-preserved and most beautiful areas in the entire Amazon, Suriname’s rainforest is home to numerous bird species, diverse mammals, and rich flora and fauna. The Forest Walk introduces you to medicinal plants and herbs growing in the forest.

     

    Cultural Performance

    The residents of the Upper Suriname region, the Saramaccans, eagerly share their cultural traditions with you. Experience ancient dance forms during a cultural show, immersing yourself in the rhythmic singing. Dance served as a means of communication during slavery. The performance includes stories about the history and meanings behind the dance steps.

     

    Boat Excursions

    Danpaati River Lodge offers several boat trips, ranging from half an hour to half a day. Enjoy a boat ride to the Tapawatra rapids or take a dip at Bihati Sula, just half an hour from Danpaati. Embark on a nighttime river cruise where the chance of spotting caimans is high. Be amazed by the stories shared by the boatmen!

     

    Saamaka Maroon Museum

    To gain insight into the Saramaccans and their culture, a visit to the Saamaka Maroon Museum is a must! Located approximately 30 minutes by boat from Danpaati, the museum focuses on the cultural heritage of the Saramaccan Maroon population. Learn about their history, ancient traditions, and craftsmanship. The museum is divided into sections reflecting the living worlds of women, men, and children. Additionally, the museum has a restaurant where you can savor a delightful traditional meal.
