Akira Resort Bigi Pan

Bigi Pan is a very bird-rich nature area located on the west coast of Suriname and covers 68,000 acres. Big Pan (which means Big Lake in Surinam) is an area formed from creeks, mangroves, wet and dry marshes. The Akira resort is located in the middle of the lake.

As part of this tour you will travel through 4 of the 6 coastal districts of Suriname, all full of history, culture and nature. You will visit the capitals of Saramacca, Coronie and Nickerie. The 3-day tour to the Akira Resort in Nickerie / Bigi Pan starts early in the morning from Paramaribo with the town of Groningen as the first stop. Groningen is the capital of Saramacca (known as the horticultural district of Suriname) where emigrated Dutch farmers founded a settlement in 1845 for the first time in Surinamese history, hoping to build a better life. You continue your route to Nickerie / Bigi Pan and then you leave for the coconut district Coronie where you can still see some houses of slaves released in original style and you will have a guided tour in the Mangrove Center. The bus trip ends in Nieuw Nickerie where you visit the market (it is closed on Sundays and public holidays). Then continue where you board a boat towards Bigi Pan. After an hour of sailing you will arrive at the Akira Resort where you will spend the next 2 nights. After dinner, board the boat to spot caimans and snakes.

At sunrise you can enjoy the flock of birds leaving their resting place from your balcony. In the season (mid-October-March) of the migratory birds you will board a boat for an early morning bird watching tour. Set eyes on the colored Ibises, Egrets and many more beautiful birds. The rest of the morning you are free to kayak, canoe, catch traditional crabs or just relax. In the afternoon there is an extensive boat trip through the swamp to enjoy the special flora and fauna. In the season this tour ends at the place where the migratory birds gather to spend the night. You experience a magical event in which thousands of birds color the sky.

** The amount and type of bird species in this area is strongly dependent on the season.

After breakfast you can spot birds or sunbathe and enjoy the view. Shortly after lunch you will leave for Paramaribo, visiting the town of Wageningen (formerly the heart of the mechanical rice industry) en route and if the day permits, you will visit the seawall (on request). You will arrive in Paramaribo in the early evening.

Most tour operators (like Orange Travel) list their rates in Euro.
The most advantageous way to pay is cash or by bank* in Euro.
Followed by cash in SRD or U$D, then POS in SRD * and finally a credit card payment **.

* If there are any additional bank charges, these should be paid by the customer. If it turns out that not the full agreed amount is credited to our account, the difference should still be paid before participating or checking in.

** When using POS (our machine only excepts SRD) we will use the daily exchange rate of the cambio’s. As these sometimes differ significantly from the rate your- and our bank uses, you can come out worse between 10% and 30% (in this Orange Travel has no benefit, yet influence).

*** All credit card payments are processed in U$D and a bank fee is added. The fee for Visa and MasterCard is 5% (in this Orange Travel has no benefit, yet influence). This payment method requires you to show your passport.
